In general weapons in wars should only be used for maintaining peace and order and for know other purpose so yes in certain cases they are necessary but if everyone used them for that cause then there would be no need to wage war. On the necessity to kill animals for food side there is not a need to kill them because we have supplements for them but in in order to stabilize certain aspects of the economy and just because I myself would greatly dislike a world without meat I believe it is more beneficial to hunt animals.

So basically weapons to maintain peace and to hunt are good? But if weapons were never invented, we wouldn't need them to keep peace...

At the start, weapons were sticks and stones. Now they are laser guided, flying piles of explosives. Whether they are right or wrong, weapons are here to stay.
